Venice, Italy

Getting There

Fly into Venice Marco Polo Airport or the nearby Treviso Airport. From Marco Polo, you can reach the city centre via water taxi, bus, or the convenient Alilaguna water bus.

Transportation & Tickets

Purchase a 24-hour vaporetto (water bus) pass upon arrival. These public water buses are Venice’s primary transport system, as the city’s canals make walking between distant areas impossible.

Important: Each vaporetto stop allows you up to 90 minutes before your ticket expires, so plan your route accordingly. For longer stays, consider weekly passes for better value.

Budget Planning

Be prepared: Venice is decidedly upmarket, with daily expenses easily reaching £150+ per person. This includes meals, attractions, and transport. Budget accordingly for one of Europe’s pricier destinations.

When to Visit

Avoid summer months if possible – Venice becomes swelteringly hot and overwhelmingly crowded. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the best weather and fewer tourists.

Getting Around

Whilst Venice’s historic centre is compact, the canal network means you’ll rely heavily on vaporettos to move between districts efficiently. Most major attractions are within walking distance once you reach the correct area.

Top tip: Use left luggage services at Santa Lucia railway station for day visits – exploring Venice with luggage is impractical given the numerous bridges and steps.

Essential Districts to Explore

  • San Marco – The famous square, Doge’s Palace, and St. Mark’s Basilica
  • San Polo – The Rialto Market and vibrant local atmosphere
  • Cannaregio – Authentic Venetian life and the historic Jewish Quarter
  • Murano – Famous glass-making island (short vaporetto journey)

Recommended Duration

Allow minimum 3 full days to properly experience Venice’s main attractions and soak up the unique atmosphere without rushing.
